In the EU, long-term unemployment, which refers to people with continuous periods of unemployment extending for a year or longer, has doubled since 2007. In 2014, 12 million people in the EU were registered as long-term unemployed. As a share of total unemployed, the percentage of long-term unemployed of is also on the increase. 60 % of unemployed within the EU have been part of this category for more than a year.

This week, the European Office of the Austrian Trade Union Federation ÖGB, AK EUROPA and UNI Europa hosted a panel discussion on “Digitalisation”. In front of a packed audience, the invited guests learned about the ideas of the European Union on the digital single market and its impact on employment, markets and consumer and social behaviour.

Concerning the controversial Free Trade Agreement between the EU and the USA (TTIP), the European Commission has once again become active. This week, it presented “new” ideas as to how disputes between investors and states might be solved in future. It is a well-known fact that the currently envisaged ISDS model has been firmly rejected by trade unions and civil society.

The dispute settlement between corporations and states is one of the most controversial chapters in the planned Free Trade Agreement between the EU and the USA.

The dominance of business and finance in the expert groups of the European Commission has been criticised for years. Only recently, the European Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly carried out a thorough review of the composition and working methods of these groups and presented a comprehensive catalogue of measures to finally improve the current system.

From 6 to 10 July 2015 the 13th round of negotiations on the plurilateral Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA) took place in Geneva. The Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour (AK) would like to take this as an opportunity to underline the basic positions of the AK on the TiSA negotiations once more and to state its position on some areas in the context of current negotiating texts.

After a month-long delay, the European Parliament this week voted on recommendations of the "chamber of citizens" on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership TTIP (“Lange report”). The compromise amendment between Social Democrats and Christian Democrats on the controversial private investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), which had been tabled in the last minute, and the entire report were adopted.

New technologies provide companies with increasingly more options to monitor and analyse their (potential) customers without their knowledge.

In accordance with its 2015 Work Programme, the EU Commission decided this week to withdraw the Maternity Leave Directive - a proposal, which would have led to the improved reconciliation between work and family life. However, in this case one cannot pass the blame onto the EU Commission; it is rather a question of the gap between the ideas of EU Parliament and Member States being too wide. The negotiations lasted seven years - unfortunately to no avail.

Last week, AK EUROPA, the Brussels Office of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour and ÖGB Europabüro, the Brussels Office of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions hosted a high calibre panel discussion on the issue of regulatory cooperation in TTIP. Subject of the debate were the so-called non-tariff barriers to trade, which are to be reduced in the “novel” trade agreements TTIP and CETA by intensive cooperation of the legislators.
