The European Parliament has rushed through its decision to stop plans of the European Commission to allow misleading food labelling. It was only at the start of the week, that the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety voted against statements on food packages, such as “only contains 5 % fat” and similar. Only a few days later, this vote was confirmed in the Plenum.
Hence, the European Parliament pre-empts a plan of the European Commission to allow misleading statements on salt, fat and sugar content for example. The MEPs anticipated the risk that consumers are being misled, as a product might contain less fat, but a large quantity of sugar, which would not make it healthier. Based on the decision of the European Parliament, the Commission is now back to square one, and will hopefully come up with food labelling, which focuses on the interests of consumers rather than on those of the food industry.
