This week, the EU Commission presented a new global university ranking system, based on which over 850 universities all over the world can be evaluated. This new system provides access to far more indictors than before. Also interesting is the fact that users can compile a personal ranking based on their individual requirements. Hence, students are able to find information on universities or specific subjects they are most interested in and base criteria in accordance with their own preferences.
“U-Multirank” provides better information for selecting a university

The university ranking “U-Multirank”, which has been presented now, is the result of a resolution by Member States from 2008, based on which a new concept for a university ranking was proposed. Subsequently, the European Commission instructed experts to prepare a feasibility study to ensure that the project would be supported by universities and students. Whilst traditional international rankings have the tendency to focus on top level research, thereby neglecting other factors, U-Multirank bases its evaluation on five main criteria: research achievement, quality of teaching and learning environment, international orientation, performance in respect of knowledge transfer (partnerships with business and spin-offs) and regional engagement.

Students participated in developing the ranking

U-Multirank not only evaluates the overall performance of universities, but also provides rankings focussing on particular academic disciplines: these are business economics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and physics in 2014; in 2015, these will be joined by psychology, computer science and medicine. Universities are assessed based on up to 30 individual indicators and divided into five performance groups, from A (very good) to E (weak). The result shows that even though 95 % of institutions reach an A for at least one measure, only 12 % achieve more than ten top rankings. From 850 universities included in the ranking, 62 % are in Europe, 17 % in North America, 14 % in Asia and 7 % in Oceania, Latin America and Africa. It is also important to mention that the new ranking also took feedback of 60,000 students of participating universities into account.
