BackUpdating travel legislation has been an issue in Brussels for years. The Commission finally presented its proposals in November 2023, also prompted by the experience of the COVID-19 crisis. One aim is to strengthen passengers' rights. In AK’s view, the Commission's proposals are a step in the right direction in some areas, but overall they fall short of what is needed.
Passengers want to use public transport well informed, in comfortable and sufficiently available means of transport, protected by uniform, transparent and enforceable European passenger rights for all types of journeys, including single-mode, multimodal and combined journeys. All passenger complaints, regardless of operator, mode or distance, should be easy to lodge with a national enforcement body. Participation in these procedures must be mandatory for companies as part of alternative dispute resolution.
