BackSince 2018, AK has contributed to the analysis of prosperity and well-being in Austria with its AK Well-being Report (AK-Wohlstandsbericht). Austria's social and economic progress is analysed on the basis of the modified "magic polygon" of a well-being oriented economic policy from the perspective of an institution representing the interests of employees. There are five overarching goals and six sub-goals for each of them. The five goals are: Fairly distributed material prosperity, Full employment and decent work, Quality of life, Intact environment, Economic stability. Such a country report should be implemented in governance structures to promote well-informed policy-making both at national level and in the European Semester at EU level.
The 2023 report assesses the achievement of the 30 sub-goals over the period 2019-2024. The sustainable development of prosperity and well-being in Austria continues to suffer setbacks due to the recent crises caused by the pandemic and inflation. In a European comparison, Austria continues to perform well and is one of the countries with the best quality of life. The well-developed welfare state has cushioned the social impacts of the crises. However, inequality has increased and Austria's climate protection efforts are insufficient. While inflation rates slow down, an economic downturn with rising unemployment and poverty is looming. It concludes with policy recommendations to promote prosperity and well-being.
