Organisations representing the three pillars of the European Water Resilience Strategy express their strong concerns with the announcement of a revision of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD has helped deliver clean rivers and access to safe water for decades. The European Commission’s recent plan to revise it risks slowing this at a time when climate events and pollution are posing significant threats.

They therefore call on the Commission to refrain from reopening, amending or weakening the WFD. Instead, they urge the Commission to prioritise the full and timely implementation and enforcement of the existing water acquis, and ensure a clear, stable and predictable regulatory environment that safeguards progress, qualified workers and investment.
